Neglected Media
Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

March 10-11, 2011

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Lisa Nakamura (Director of the Asian American Studies Program, Professor in the Institute of Communication Research and Media Studies Program, and Professor of Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign).

We seek proposals for individual paper presentations as well as pre-formed panels that interpret and explore the theme of Neglected Media. We invite and encourage submissions from faculty and graduate students and from those who study in departments outside of communication.

There are many ways in which media can be thought of as neglected. Communication studies has highlighted the social significance of fringe media, examining texts and groups that have been overlooked by other facets of scholarship. As well, some scholars have drawn our attention to more creative and nuanced ways to think about media (i.e. material objects, city landscapes) beyond the traditional mass media. Still other work has considered neglected aspects of mainstream media content and re-examined familiar systems of communication (i.e. television, mobility) from new angles. Neglect also implies the breakdown of social responsibility and an impact on development in media that can lead to poor policy decisions or missed opportunities for growth (i.e. infrastructure, regulation). This conference focuses on what has been passed over, not given due attention, or disregarded in communication and media studies. More specifically, it asks how overlooked or forgotten theories, scholars, and objects of study can and have nourished academic inquiry in the interdiscipline of communication studies.

Among other related topics, we invite papers that consider:
* Forgotten people, places, and periods of media theory
* Underutilized research methodologies
* New subjects for communication studies
* Overlooked everyday mediation
* Neglected intersections of academic study
* Negligence in the media industries

Please submit an abstract of up to 200 words (preferably in Word format) outlining your proposed paper topic along with your name, affiliation, contact information (e-mail address), and audio/visual needs.
